Life in IT

I started my career as a Trainee Asssociate Systems Analyst(known as TASA @ NSE.IT) at NSE.IT.My first assignment was at NCDEX i.e National Commodities and derivatives exchange which is one of the premier commodities exchange of india. As a fresher ,i got a good start where i learned different technologies , a good domain and overall a good atmosphere where a true professional is developed.

My first day was with Atul Shahpurkar, who is a nice and cool guy and then he introduced me to Hozefa Poonawala, a guy of a strong calibre and intelligent. We were of the same age and thus our friendship started soon.We had a senior ,Anirban roy,i can call him a fatherly figure to me as he taught me the basics of the IT industry. My training started under Anirban and Hozefa, where i learned the mainframe technologies.I started liking my life where i was supporting the exchange and where my presense was so important that without my consent market was not supposed to open.I was flying high on clouds where everything was green.

I was in NSE.It from April 2004 to Aug 2006 and the company was awesome .I got good friends there developed into an IT professional. The culture of NSE.IT was good where we used to get parties, picnics. There used to be open days where CEO used to give his feedback on company's performance and how well we are doing. The NSE.IT is a good name in terms of domain competency as we were supporting exchanges which includes NSE and NCDEX.The mumbai life is one of the best life one can get.Monday to friday do hard work and saturday sunday full enjoyment. When i came to mumbai for job ,i came with my dad and was put up at NTPC's guest house @ Powai.Powai is one of the posh area of mumbai where u get sky high buildings.and sky high rentals. When i started i came with 2000 bucks which my dad gave me for initial 15 days as i was in testing period so my career was niot started till my 15 days are over. After my initial 15 days i called my mentor,Sudarshan Singh who is one of the gems of the IT industry. He taught me many things which includes people friendly, technically strong guy. There i met Chetan Patel too who was also good but used to cribb on pity things like shift job, family boundations etc.I used to think he was wrong but after my marriage i started thinking the same way as he used to think. He taught me extranet where all the members data was kept.We used Toad for database extraction and whenever condition arises we used to provide data to market watch and users.I am a pampered child and never thought of consequences before taking any action. There were many cases where i was about to loose my job but still my job continued in NSE.IT.

My core expertise started in mainframes where i started making programs. We used to get bored of the same kind of work day-in and day-out.We used to work on saturdays on alternate basis where we used to support live market for saturday and support the batch after that.We were handling mainframe machines,so we used to apply standard checks on daily basis which helps us to get the result of disk space, memory usage ,any exceptions etc.I worked till Mar 2006 in the mean-time i developed many valuable friendships which includes Hozefa Poonawala,Atul Shahpurkar,Nipul patel,Jimmy Joseph,Chetan Patel,Sunny Kulkarni,Cedric D'Sa,William Menzez,Lalit Choudhari,Milind Phadke,Harshal Amre,Rajesh Singh,Shakti vardhan,DCOPS of NCDEX as well as NSE,Sarvesh Dhuri,Prakash Hulsurkar,Umesh Bhagate,Nilesh Kale,Shailesh Pradhan,Abhishesk Choubey.

I was transferred to andheri office in Mar 2006 and there i got to work on J2EE projects Blue-chip,Money maximier which were headed by Kshitiij Shah and Neelima Prabhu.I got hands-on J2EE while i was with them.We used to work on hibernate,EJB,struts. There also i developed good relationships with Swapnesh Karpe,Mahesh,Makrand Sinkar. The project was successful but i was not with the project. There were jems in the J2EE project ,to name a few Swapnesh Karpe,Swapnil Bakore,Ameya Birje,Omkar Tamboli,Debashish,Kapil Dingore,Prachi,Prakash (BA),Chinmay. There I learned the basics of developement with the help of Makarand Sinkar, who was managing us at that time.He helped to struggle and keep fighting.I struggled and struggled but after that i went for information security where i was reporting to Sarvesh dhuri with whom i met at NCDEX and our super boss Ashish Dandekar, a strict and disciplined guy.Sarvesh dhuri helped me to understand the basics of business continuity plan (BCP) for any organozation.

In the meantime I came in touch with Jatin Mehta, who is HR in HSBC GLT.I was impressed by the name HSBC as it is a big name in banking industry.I get in touch with him and he told me that there are vacancies in HSBC and I can apply there will be an interview on Saturday.I was not aware of the procedure for recruitment.I was studying Java and was supported by Swapnesh,Swapnil for the same. The red letter day came on saturday and i went for the interview.I am a guy who has varied experience which includes mainframes and Java,so when HR asked me which profile you want to go,i went for Java.I appeared for the test which has Java and aptitude test.I got through the test which i was surprised. The time came for my interview, the interviewer didnt asked many questions but whatever questions I answered were correct though.I got a call from HR for the final round, which was Lakhmi madhusudan. She was strict in her voice and there i felt that i should grab this opportunity as I wanted Pune and sacrificed my increment in NSE.IT and settled for the same position which was of a software engineer which I am regretting now.If i would have denied the offer and would be stable in NSE.IT they would have given me more compensation as well as promotion.I am writing this because after working in HSBC I came across many guys who were of same experience level as mine but I was reporting to them.

By starting of 2008,I started with HeadStrong, where I was showcased as a "Calypso" resource and  started working with a well-known investment in support.Initially it was tough for me as place was new and people were aggressive then Pune-Mumbai guys.I started as a Lead in one of the LOB(Lines of Business) i.e Batch which technically is to check the scheduled tasks in Calypso and check for failures and do the casual analysis of the failure of the jobs.Eventually team was grown to 4 and documented the batch process as well.I was usually providing support at graveyard shift and asked manager to change my shift which was eventually done and slowly I felt that I am not doing what I am supposed to do,Hence asked if I can work for Testing as I thought I am strong in documentation and moved into Calypso-Center of Excellence and started writing test-cases and started enjoying testing and it is now my forte. But destiny has some other plans,as I was not billed to any project, and time running out of my hand,I was eventually asked to leave from Headstrong in recession and one of the tough times started and started struggling for a job as I was getting a handsome pay.

After struggling for a while,I got a job with AppLabs at Hyderabad and one of the mentors i.e Rajesh Patil picked me up and got good friends Pankaj Bazaari,Ashudeep Singla,Manmeet Kalsi and list goes on...but stint was less as I got an offer from Capgemini and work location changed to Chennai.

At Chennai too I got mentors Prasanna Venkoba Rao,Srikant Vrundhula and always eager to learn more landed for my first onsite trip to Paris for 28 days which were too good as I went for onsite once and thru Capgemini it was heaven.I met many good guys there and to name a few are Nikhil Yekhe,Ravi Bhushan Kumar,Siva Kumar Rajendran,Ashish Agarwal and the list goes on..Outside Capgemini I was staying with one of  my school friend i.e sSatyarth Singh and thru him got introduced to Ravi Kumar and Ameya Deshpande. After sometime I got an oppotunity to work from Capgemini,Pune and after a year got an opportunity to work with Tech Mahindra(Erstwhile Mahindra Satyam) and within couple of months I was asked to travel onsite for a long term with a well-known Canadian bank and stayed there for 6 months. After coming back again struggle started for a project and got a chance to work with NYSE-Euronext but it lasted for a year and I was supposed to work on telecom and which I did and in the meanwhile I got an offer from Infrasoft as a Senior Business Analyst and currently working with them.

Life in IT is full of ups and downs and sometimes I feel that working for a core industries will be better and core industries are Manufacturing,Banking where after initial struggle of 3-4 years you come into a good position whereas IT is always looked as a support function.
